Marjet Visscher creates contemporary nature art in which observation, imagination and emotion converge. In oil paint, drawing, printmaking and pastel, she transforms leaves, branches, woodland openings and falling light into layered, almost inhabitable worlds rather than literal depictions. Her work moves between figuration and abstraction, stillness and movement, growth and decay. That charged balance gives her paintings and works on paper their distinctive atmosphere and makes them compelling for lovers of poetic landscape painting and botanical imagery.

In the paintings of Marjet Visscher (1979) the landscape is not presented as scenery but as a living, sensory presence. Raised as the daughter of a farmer in Groningen, she has a deep-rooted connection to the natural world, yet her work is never simply descriptive. What first catches her eye and touches her emotionally — the shape of a leaf, the dark vertical of a tree trunk, a sudden passage of light, a dense tangle of stems or an unexpected view into undergrowth — becomes the starting point for immersive images that invite the viewer to wander, linger and look again. She often works in series, returning to a specific place over time, such as the butterbur fields of Amelisweerd or the green edges surrounding Utrecht.

A defining quality of her oeuvre is its use of contrast. Marjet Visscher deliberately works between abstraction and figuration, light and shadow, bloom and decline, soft transitions and sharp contours, transparent layers and opaque paint. This gives her paintings and works on paper a richly layered presence: at times lush and rhythmic, at times quiet and almost weightless, yet always rooted in sustained attention. In her more recent pastel works, that sensitivity to structure, colour and atmosphere remains just as strong. The result is contemporary nature painting with a distinctly poetic signature — art that not only reflects the complexity of plants, trees and forest interiors, but also opens a space for wonder, stillness and slow looking.
